Upgrade Mattermost Enterprise Edition to Team Edition

Mattermost was created as a free and open-source alternative to Slack, but over the years they also added an “Enterprise” paid version, with more features. It can be a bit confusing, because the free and open-source version is called “Team Edition”, but the Enterprise one also has a free plan. Mattermost makes it very easy to switch from the Team Edition to the free plan of the Enterprise Edition (called “Entry”): this can be done with a single click in the admin settings.

The 11.0 release of Mattermost introduced a hard limit of 10k messages on the free plan, meaning even on self-hosted installations one cannot see more than the past 10,000 messages, like Slack. The solution is either to pay, downgrade to 10.x and never upgrade again, or switch to the Team Edition.

Mattermost’s documentation explains how to upgrade from the Team Edition to the Enterprise one, but not the opposite. Well, spoiler: it works exactly the same way. Just follow the upgrade guide but download the Team Edition instead of the Enterprise Edition. That’s it, you’re on the Team Edition and can now upgrade Mattermost without limitation with fewer limitations …for now at least.
